Hone Quarry Waterfall is located in the Shenandoah Valley, near the town of Dayton. It is part of Hone Quarry Recreation Area, which was once a site for limestone quarrying. The quarry was active from the late 1800s until the 1950s, when it was abandoned and the area was reclaimed by nature. Today, Hone Quarry Recreation Area is a popular destination for camping, hiking, and picnicking, and the waterfall is a highlight of the area.

The waterfall is fed by Hone Quarry Creek, which flows from the surrounding mountains and eventually joins the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The water cascades over a series of rocks and boulders, creating a beautiful and dramatic display of nature’s power. The area around the waterfall is lush with vegetation, including ferns, mosses, and wildflowers. It’s a peaceful and serene setting, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life.

To visit Hone Quarry Waterfall, you’ll need to access Hone Quarry Recreation Area. The recreation area is located off of Route 257, about 11 miles west of the town of Dayton. There is a small fee to enter the recreation area, which helps maintain the facilities and trails. We hiked to the falls in mid-July when the weather was rather dry and the falls were less impressive than they are in the spring or after some rain. It was still definitively worth the trip.

Once you arrive at the recreation area, you can park in the designated parking lot and follow the signs for the waterfall trail. The trail is a moderate hike, about 1.2 miles round-trip, and takes about 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The trail is well-marked and maintained, but it can be rocky and steep in places, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water.
